1972 red/white base:  This base began issue in 1972 and used many different plate number formats, including "000-000", "0A-0000", "00A-000", "000-00A" and "A00-000".



1977 green/white base:  This base began issue in 1977 and used basically a "000-AAA" plate number format.  Owners who had the 1972 base formats were allowed to duplicate their plate numbers on the new green/white base so those 1972 formats above are also found on this base.



1993 "The Spirit of America" base:  This base began in 1993 ("94" expiration sticker) and has used many different plate number formats.  The first format used was "000 AAA" beginning with the "ZAA" block.  The next format used was "000 0AA", followed by "0000-AA" and "000 0AA" (no dot in the middle).  The current format is "00A A00".  Beginning in April 2007 (March expirations), the state began screened the expiration month.
